Teaching Career Statistics
  • There were 3.8 million preschool - secondary school teachers in 2002.
    • 1.5 million taught in elementary schools
    • 1.1 million taught in secondary schools
    • Over 600,000 were middle school teachers
    • There were about 424,000 preschool teachers and 168,000 kindergarten teachers
  • About 10% worked in private schools
  • Most states offer teachers tenure after about three years of employment; tenure helps protect against unfair job loss, but does not guarantee employment
  • Public school teachers must be licensed - private school teachers do not have to be
  • All states require teachers to have at least a bachelor's degree and teaching certificate (with practical training)
    • Some states require teachers to get their Masters in Education within a few years of teaching
